Young Workers

Supporting the next generation of leaders

CUPE BC’s Young Workers Committee was established to bring focus and priority to issues specific to young workers. The Committee engages in activities and initiatives with the goal of inspiring young workers to become active in their union, and in their communities.

The Committee focuses on how to engage more young workers in our union, and how young workers on the Committee can build their own capacity and grow as activists.

Building solidarity on issues that matter

The Committee continues to engage and develop activists aged 30 years or younger by providing leadership opportunities, specialized training, and unique projects to promote inclusion in CUPE BC structures.

Over the past several years, the Committee has focused on several priority areas, including reconciliation, leadership development, mentorship, and succession planning. Committee members have also worked to build solidarity on issues of affordability and sustainability, including tuition fees, housing, climate change, and precarious work.

Looking forward, the Committee is hoping to provide additional informal mentorship opportunities for new and young workers.

Are you currently age 30 or under? Then you are in the distinct class of “young worker”. In fact, 1 in 5 CUPE members fall in this category.

The Young Workers Committee exists to help young workers connect with other young workers and the community at large. Advocating for young workers issues and social justice issues are at the forefront of the committee.

They plan and host events that inspire and build union interest and solidarity not only among peers but in the greater community. Many young people have never had a union job, and this is a venue to showcase all the positives that go along with that.

All members of the Local are open to training and education. Being more involved in your Local, such as being a committee member, is looked at more favorably in the selection process when applying for education or going to conventions.
