Committees

These are the committees named in our bylaws.  Here is a contact information, updates and information from each committee.

Negotiating Committee

The Negotiating Committee collects requirements and priorities from the membership and bargains with the employer to agree on a mutually beneficial collective agreement.  The committee members receive extensive CUPE Bargaining education and work with our National Representative to put forward additions and changes to the collective agreement.
The members of the committee who actually do the bargaining are traditionally the President or the Vice President for the Unit, the National Representative, and 2 additional members to assist in taking notes and ensuring availability of CUPE at the bargainng table.  But more committee members are required to perform investigation of issues, conduct surveys and compile results, and help ensure the Bargaining Committee are aware of the desires of the membership.

Grievance Committee

The Grievance Committee manages the grievances raised by our members through their Shop Stewards.   The goal of the Shop Steward is to assist the member in resolving disagreements with their supervisors and managers without the need of entry into a formal grievance process.  However, sometimes a solution or compromise is unattainable and CUPE must initiate a grievance.  Due to confidentiality, details of grievances cannot be posted on the web site.  We encourage members to keep their Shop Stewards informed of issues in their area so that the Grievance Committee is aware.

Political Action Committee

The Political Action Committee have a mandate to organize and coordinate initiatives which will ensure representation of CUPE’s political views in elected bodies affecting our local and sub-locals.  Our goal is to keep our members informed about basic political choices in our society and to participate in the political process.  CUPE, as a union, has a lot at stake in community elections. As public employees, our elected community leaders employ us, and their decisions affect our working lives daily.  Locally elected officials, like mayors, city councillors, regional district directors and school board trustees, all decide whether our working lives are governed by dignity and respect or by disdain and indifference.  Our goal is to ensure that our elected representatives share the common vision of community, respect and democracy.  As public employees, our political action means not only controlling our own destiny, but ensuring the communities we live and work in are places where we want our families, friends, and neighbours to live and thrive.
